Key Stage 4 and STEPS
Steps is a KS4 nurture group, which works closely with The Bridge, which is our feeder group. Steps is designed to enable those students who find it difficult to work in the main body of the school to thrive at their own pace and according to their individual needs.
The students in Steps also have opportunities to join their peers in lessons such as Enterprise and PE so as to participate in the wider life of the school.
The curriculum is tailored to suit their learning styles and to ensure that they make progress and are fulfilled in their learning.
On a Thursday, Yr11 students in Steps attend ‘The Net’ provision which forms a transition between the Valley School and College. This is key to help them move on in their education when they leave The Valley School.
This is the beginning of the KS4 journey and formalising of the children’s learning, as well as the opportunity to develop life-long entrepreneurial skills.
Alongside the core subjects, students are offered the opportunity to experience the real life world of work through our Enterprise project. This is an exciting development in the KS4 curriculum and will enable the students to work towards accreditation across a range of subjects. The students are encouraged to develop business skills as well as creative skills, marketing, advertising and selling their own products.
Students are also given ownership of their learning by choosing the direction they would like to take. They can choose from a range of options that include Design and Technology, Food Technology, I.C.T, Performing Arts, Sports Leadership and Art and Textiles.
4B is a new and exciting place for our students. We are a team of two teachers and two learning partners who are here to support, advise and get the best out of the students.
The new year 4B classes will have the great opportunity to guide and buddy up with our younger students. This will help our students learn social skills and develop their own techniques.
This is also a very important year as these students will be entering new adventures. Our 4B classes will be visiting different colleges such as Hitchin, animal care. Stevenage Skill Centre, car mechanics, bricklaying and plastering and Stevenage College where they will be doing life skills and team work.
This is all a fantastic opportunity for each of our students to mature and become more independent and develop life skills.
