Key Stage 4 and STEPS
Steps is a KS4 nurture group, which works closely with The Bridge, which is our feeder group. Steps is designed to enable those students who find it difficult to work in the main body of the school to thrive at their own pace and according to their individual needs.
The students in Steps also have opportunities to join their peers in lessons such as Enterprise and PE so as to participate in the wider life of the school.
The curriculum is tailored to suit their learning styles and to ensure that they make progress and are fulfilled in their learning.
On a Thursday, Yr11 students in Steps attend ‘The Net’ provision which forms a transition between the Valley School and College. This is key to help them move on in their education when they leave The Valley School.
This is the beginning of the KS4 journey and formalising of the children’s learning, as well as the opportunity to develop life-long entrepreneurial skills.
Alongside the core subjects, students are offered the opportunity to experience the real life world of work through our Enterprise project. This is an exciting development in the KS4 curriculum and will enable the students to work towards accreditation across a range of subjects. The students are encouraged to develop business skills as well as creative skills, marketing, advertising and selling their own products.
Students are also given ownership of their learning by choosing the direction they would like to take. They can choose from a range of options that include Design and Technology, Food Technology, I.C.T, Performing Arts, Sports Leadership and Art and Textiles.
Year 11 is an exciting time for our pupils, when we work hard to ensure each and every one of them is ready to take on their next challenge after The Valley, whatever that may be.
Year 11s have plenty of opportunities to develop their leadership skills during the year, taking on mentoring and school-wide responsibilities. They act as role models to the younger pupils and play to their strengths to give back to the school community.
Pupils have the opportunity to explore college courses and attend taster days and link courses to build on their understanding of what is on offer once they leave The Valley. We work closely with a number of provisions to find something for everybody.
There are lots of qualifications on offer to pupils and you can find out more about these in each subject under the ‘Our Work’ tab above.
We encourage independence in Year 11 and support pupils to take the steps they need to live a happy and healthy life beyond The Valley
