Intent – What are we aiming to achieve through our curriculum?
To provide holistic lessons by exploring opportunities that will allow students to understand why play and creative activities are important to children’s learning.
To develop students’ knowledge and understanding of how children learn.
To increase resilience and independence through activities that help students explore and understand key concepts of the curriculum.
To develop students’ essential life skills, enhancing their knowledge and the ‘cultural capital’ they need to succeed in life (personal development), through exploring the role of the professional when working with children.
To prepare students for the next stage of their education.
To ensure all students complete the Childcare option with outcomes that reflect the best of their ability.
Implementation – How are we delivering our curriculum?
Students have full access to a broad and balanced curriculum, which is differentiated to meet students’ learning needs and styles.
Students are taught through a half-termly theme or topic, them to draw links between subjects.
Students explore a variety of creative and play activities, learning how to make, create, set up, and tidy away the activities.
They learn about safety aspects of these activities and how the role of the adult can support children’s learning.
The topics allow students to explore different types of play and creative activities, and then reflect on how they link to four main elements of children’s learning through the term P.I.E.S. (physical, intellectual, emotional, social)
The Childcare curriculum is designed to develop and build new skills and subject knowledge. The curriculum includes frequent opportunities for repetition to fully embed knowledge, increasing the chance of information recall.
Impact – What difference is the curriculum making to our students?
In Childcare, the vast majority of students meet or exceed their expected progress, based on their starting points.
It builds confidence in life skills, helping students understand what to do and how to support children if they choose to work in a childcare setting.
The majority of students are on track to meet or exceed their expected outcomes in Year 10 (BTEC qualifications).
When students complete Childcare in Year 10, they will have gained one unit from the BTEC externally accredited qualifications, or external awards which reflect the student’s best ability.
Students are well-prepared for the next stage of their education.
