The Valley School General Election

With the General Election on Thursday this week, we thought it would be good for the students to engage with our democratic process as much as they could and learn a little about it.

The students were taught about the election process. They then understood the process of voting for the leader of the country and that this is part of being a Democracy, one of our British Values, and that not everyone in the world has this opportunity.

On Thursday, students had the chance to vote in our own General Election. Each student received a Ballot Paper with four candidates to choose from, representing the Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats and the Green Party.

Students needed to mark a cross in the box for the candidate of their choice, and then post their vote into the Ballot Box, which was outside the Hall.

The box was available all day, just like a real Voting Station.

Votes were counted

131 students voted, which was a better turn out than in the General Election. We found the results were different too!

Stitch – Conservative: 41 votes

Elmo – Labour : 40 votes

Shrek – Green party : 35 votes

Lorax – Liberal Democrats: 10 votes

5 papers were spoiled and discounted.
