Year 8 Outdoor Learning

October 14, 2025/0 Comments/in General News, Uncategorized/by David Pearce

Year 8 Outdoor Learning

Year 8 have been working hard in their outdoor learning sessions, gaining valuable hands-on experience in the allotment area. They have been learning to identify the difference between weeds and flowers, an important step in maintaining a healthy garden. Using the correct tools, students have been carefully weeding the allotment and preparing the space for new growth. They have also laid down fresh soil, getting the area ready for planting a variety of new flowers and vegetables. Their efforts are helping to create a thriving and sustainable garden space for everyone to enjoy.

The Use of Mobile Phones at Our School

October 14, 2025/0 Comments/in General News, Uncategorized/by David Pearce

The Use of Mobile Phones at Our School

Some parents have asked why we allow students access to mobile phones whilst at The Valley School, so we are taking this opportunity to explain.

At our school, we take a thoughtful and balanced approach to the use of mobile phones. As a secondary SEN school, we recognise that our role is not to shield or “bubble wrap” our students from the realities of modern life, but rather to support them in developing the skills they need to thrive in it.

Mobile phones are an everyday part of society, and our young people will continue to use them as they grow and become more independent. Instead of banning them outright, we believe in teaching our students how to use their phones responsibly, safely, and respectfully. This means understanding when it is appropriate to use a phone, how to manage distractions, and how to stay safe online.

Allowing the use of mobile phones in school provides us with real opportunities to guide students in making the right choices. Our staff can model and encourage positive behaviour, helping students to build healthy habits around technology. We see this as an important step in preparing them for adulthood, where responsible phone use will be essential in work, relationships, and daily life.

By supporting students in this way, we aim to foster independence, resilience, and responsibility – key skills for their future.

Maroon Class’s First Trip of the Year!

October 14, 2025/0 Comments/in General News, Uncategorized/by David Pearce

Maroon Class’s First Trip of the Year!

Maroon Class kicked off our first adventure of the year with a visit to Waste Not Want Not nursery and recycling centre. Excitement filled the air as we pulled on our wellington boots and wrapped up in warm coats, ready for the day ahead.

Rob, our guide, gave us a fantastic tour of the site, showing us around the sheds, greenhouses, and polytunnels. One of the most fascinating facts we learned was that the centre is home to half a million honeybees, living in hives at the top of the site!

After the tour, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work. Our task was to lay a new path in one of the sales areas using wood chippings and bark. We filled wheelbarrows, tipped out the contents, and carefully spread them with rakes to create a safer walkway for visitors.

Once our hard work was done, Rob treated us to delicious hot chocolate. While waiting for our drinks, some of us spotted a Christmas tree and couldn’t resist decorating it with baubles and sparkly pipe cleaners—it was a lovely festive touch, even if it’s a little early!

We’re already looking forward to next week’s activity: making winter hanging baskets!

Year 7’s Staying Safe Online

Year 7’s Staying Safe Online

Year 7 has been learning all about staying safe online. The students shared what they have learnt by writing a short play to perform as puppets to their classmates. We had lots of fun, and the messages were clear: Stay Safe Online!

Rights Respecting School Silver Award

July 7, 2025/0 Comments/in General News, Uncategorized/by David Pearce

Rights Respecting School Silver Award

I am delighted to be able to share the news that on Tuesday this week we were successful in achieving the Silver Rights Respecting School Award.

This was the culmination of nearly a year of hard work, and showed that the whole school community has made good progress towards embedding children’s rights into the learning, policy and practice. The Assessor spent the morning interviewing a group of students as well as some of the teachers, support staff and governors, and commended The Valley on being a very happy and safe school, with enthusiastic learners who enjoyed talking about their Rights in a positive and thoughtful way.  Our journey to Gold Award will take up to 2 years, but we have lots of ideas to work on and are excited to see how the school continues to develop through our Rights Respecting journey.

A Night to Remember – Year 10 & 11 Prom 2025

The Year 10 and 11 Prom was a spectacular celebration and a truly unforgettable evening for our students. Held at the fantastic venue of Stevenage Football Club, the night was filled with glamour, laughter, and joy as students arrived dressed to impress in stunning prom dresses and sharp suits.

The atmosphere was nothing short of amazing – vibrant, joyful, and full of energy. Our DJ kept the dance floor buzzing all night long, with students showing off their best moves and enjoying every beat. It was wonderful to see everyone come together to celebrate in such high spirits.  A huge thank you goes to Ms. Heller and Ms. O’Brien for the brilliant catering, which kept everyone fuelled and happy throughout the evening. The delicious food was a real highlight!

We are incredibly grateful to Mr Jones and Mr Russell, our dedicated Heads of Year, for organising such a well-run and memorable event. Their hard work and attention to detail ensured everything went smoothly and that our students had the send-off they deserved.

To our Year 11s—what a fantastic way to mark the end of your journey with us. We are so proud of you and wish you all the best for the exciting adventures ahead.  Here’s to a night we’ll never forget!

Year 9 Art Award

During the Spring Term, in their Art lessons, Year 9 students researched an artist and experimented working in the artist’s style.  Their final pieces go towards their Explore Arts Award and they are absolutely fabulous.  Copies of their final pieces are attached for you to see.

Year 10 Step Into the Wizarding World

Year 10 Step Into the Wizarding World

This week, our Year 10 students enjoyed a magical trip to Harry Potter World at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour, London.

From the Great Hall to Diagon Alley, students were fascinated by the behind-the-scenes look at how the beloved films were made. Highlights included exploring the sets, seeing original costumes and props, and even trying out green screen broomstick flying!

Staff were especially proud of how well students represented the school – their behaviour was excellent throughout, and they showed real curiosity and enthusiasm at every turn.  It was a truly memorable day, and we’re sure the magic of the experience will stay with them for years to come!

Seussical Brings the House Down!

Seussical Brings the House Down!

‘Amazing’, ‘unbelievable’ and ‘such fantastic fun’ have all been used by audience members to describe our colourful production of Seussical! The enthusiasm and talent of the students was amazing. The quality of the performances was exceptional and there were so many stand out moments. The ‘fish’ scene under ultraviolet light was a firm favourite and the Cat and Things certainly enjoyed getting the audience wet during the storm. The soloists all showed off their beautiful voices and enjoyed getting into their characters. The ensemble executed the choreography with confidence and the tech crew ensured that each performance ran smoothly. It was wonderful to see the whole school community come together and celebrate in each performance.

Farewell Year 11 – A Week to Remember!

As we say goodbye to our incredible Year 11s, we reflect on a truly memorable Activities Week filled with laughter, adventure, and celebration. From exploring the wonders of a wildlife park to the thrills of Chessington World of Adventures and enjoying a variety of fun activities back at school, our students have made the most of every moment.  This special week was made even more meaningful thanks to the unwavering support of their dedicated teachers, support staff, and Heads of Year –  Mr. Jones and Mr. Russell.
