Year 8 Jailbreak Café Visit

October 10, 2024/0 Comments/in General News, Uncategorized/by David Pearce

Year 8 Jailbreak Café Visit

This week each year 8 class went to the Jailbreak Café and had a fantastic time. They all ordered their own drink and sweet treat and then went to the police station cells to eat and enjoy our surroundings. We were able to see what it would have been like to be a prisoner and even saw the original metal toilets used by prisoners and now the public too. The favourite part was using the props to have a photo and be ‘checked in’ as prisoners.  Well done all of Year 8!

Year 10 Library Visit

Year 10 Library Visit

Year 10 visited the Stevenage Library on Thursday to celebrate National Libraries Week. The theme of this year is ‘Going Green’. Students all made a pledge to carry out a small task to be more sustainable such as switching off lights or turning the heating down. While there, they had to opportunity to read books, listen to a member of staff read a book and create leaves and blossom out of old books.

National Carrot Day and National Poetry Day

October 4, 2024/0 Comments/in General News, Uncategorized/by David Pearce

National Carrot Day and National Poetry Day

On Thursday the students very much enjoyed the fact that it was National Carrot Day, and had great fun including Kevin the Carrot in many of their lessons.  The general consensus was that he always participated with a smile on his face, but struggled to join in when answering questions or with group discussions!

To recognise the National Poetry Day Mr Wharton discovered the following poem about a carrot by Ibsen.

Beneath the earth, in soil so deep,
A carrot grows, in quiet sleep.
Orange and bright, with leafy crown,
It stretches up, but stays underground.

Crunchy and sweet, a humble delight,
It hides in shadows, out of sight.
But pull it up, and you will see,
A treasure buried, just for me!

Terry Douris Visits The Valley School

Terry Douris Visits The Valley School

On Thursday 3rd October the Chairman of the County Council, Terry Douris, paid The Valley School a visit.  Whilst interacting with the students, Terry explained how his role was essentially to be the Mayor of the whole of Hertfordshire.  The students were fascinated with the chain he wore around his neck and what all of the elements on the chain stood for.

As a school we are very grateful to Terry for all the work he put in to advocating for our new build.  It was lovely to show him the school in full operation.  He was extremely impressed with the results.

Year 9 Trip to the Royal Gunpowder Mills

October 4, 2024/0 Comments/in General News, Uncategorized/by David Pearce

Year 9 Trip to the Royal Gunpowder Mills

We had a packed day at the Gunpowder Mills with a presentation from an actor who told us lots of information about being in the blitz and what it was like for people living through the war.

We were drilled like soldiers around part of the site and had to step in time.  We went to see a real Anderson shelter and experienced real sounds of what would have been heard by the people who had to use one.

We saw lots of missile shells as the Mills were a place of manufacturing them.
