Girls’ Sporting Success

March 19, 2025/0 Comments/in General News, Uncategorized/by David Pearce

Girls’ Sporting Success

Last week, a group of our talented girls represented The Valley School in both a Dodgeball and a Basketball tournament. They were outstanding throughout, showcasing incredible determination, sportsmanship, and teamwork.

In the Dodgeball Tournament, they won 4 out of 6 matches, securing an impressive second place overall. Meanwhile, in Basketball, they dominated, winning all 3 of their games and finishing in first place.

We are all incredibly proud of their achievements at The Valley School!

Year 7 Work Experience

March 19, 2025/0 Comments/in General News, Uncategorized/by David Pearce

Year 7 Work Experience

Maroon class visited McDonalds for a work experience session. Students were given aprons to wear to identify them as staff and to protect their clothes when working.  Students had the opportunity to support employees in their role when meeting and greeting customers, clearing and cleaning tables, asking if the customer required sauces for their meal or sugar for their hot drinks and saying goodbye to customers and wishing them well for the rest of their day.  Utsavi and Jospeh said their favourite part of the morning was cleaning the tables. Drake and Austin said they enjoyed greeting people at the door and talking to the customers at the counter.

Students were allowed to spend some of their reward points at the end of their shift and buy a treat for themselves, we practised what we were going to say before we ordered and then asked for our food and drink at the counter. We had another ‘Special Mission’ for Mr. Hugo and remembered to get him a latté.

Reading Competition

March 19, 2025/0 Comments/in General News, Uncategorized/by David Pearce

Reading Competition

It is time for our second reading competition! We would greatly appreciate your support in encouraging our students to participate to win some prizes!

This time, we want to celebrate how much reading our students do in their spare time. For every minute they read, they will earn one mile. Who can travel the furthest? Will your child make it to another country? Another continent? Or even around the whole world?

To enter, your child will need to collect a sheet from their form tutor to record their reading. Please see below an example of some recordings. The form should be returned to their form tutor or Mrs. Pomeroy no later than the 4th April.

Date What I read How many minutes spent reading
25/2/25 The Very Hungry Caterpillar 12
26/2/25 Clockwork chapter 1 23
1/3/25 Fishing magazine up to page 23 8
TOTAL MINUTES SPENT READING 43

The competition will run from 24th February 2025 until 4th April 2025 with the winner(s) being announced when we return after the Easter break.

Health and Social Care

Health and Social Care

In Health and Social Care, our Year 11 students have been learning about the importance of supporting the social and emotional needs of young children. Alongside completing their very own BTEC activities, the class have been working hard to produce a range of Worry Monster Boxes which have been delivered to some of our Year 7 and 8 classes this week.

The Year 11 students explained that when the younger students are feeling worried or concerned, they can write down or draw their worries on a piece of paper and then feed it to the monster.  Later, they can sit down with their teachers and talk about this worry and see how their feelings have changed. All the students and staff were so impressed with the quality of the designs and these little worry eating monsters look fabulous in their new homes!

February 14, 2025/0 Comments/in General News, Uncategorized/by David Pearce

Year 10 & 11 Art Trip

Miss Flynn and Mrs Pearce took the Year 10 and Year 11 BTEC Art students to London on Wednesday 12th February to visit the Tate Modern gallery on the train. The students spent time visiting the exhibitions, taking photos, sketching and observing the collection of art works on show. The students had a great time visiting the gallery and behaved impeccably throughout the trip.  Well done Year 10 and 11 students.

February 14, 2025/0 Comments/in General News, Uncategorized/by David Pearce

Seussical the Musical

Our school show this year is Seussical (Kids). This is a fantastic, colourful romp through many of the Dr Seuss stories. The characters include The Cat in the Hat, Horton, Mayzie le Bird and The Wickershams.

Students in KS3 have started learning the songs this week and will all have the opportunity to participate.

We have also been running auditions and workshops for the principal roles at lunchtimes.

The performances will be on Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 June at 6.00pm.

Please do put these dates in your diaries, there will be lots more Seussical news in the coming weeks.

A visit from the Fire Service

February 14, 2025/0 Comments/in General News, Uncategorized/by David Pearce

A visit from the Fire Service

Maroon and Peach class had a visit from the Fire Service.  The crew from Stevenage Fire Station, talked to students about the different parts of a fire engine and showed them a set of breathing apparatus. Students were able to try on a helmet, look inside the fire engine and hold the big pincers. The visited ended with students (and staff) being driven around the lower carpark complete with flashing lights.

NSPCC Number Day

February 14, 2025/0 Comments/in General News, Uncategorized/by David Pearce

NSPCC Number Day

On Friday 7th February we joined schools across the UK by taking part in Number Day, to raise awareness of the NSPCC by having fun with numbers and celebrating all things maths! It was great to see so many students, and staff, getting involved by ‘dressing up for digits’. We also took part in the NSPCC Rocks competition, with students in all years contributing points by answering questions on their Times Tables Rockstars accounts. Over 3500 schools took part and we were up against tough competition! So while we didn’t win, we finished with an impressive average score of 215 points per student, and a whopping total score of 19,643! Well done to everyone who took part in all of the fantastic maths fun throughout the day.

My faith, my identity

January 24, 2025/0 Comments/in General News, Uncategorized/by David Pearce

My faith, my identity

Year 10 have been learning about how religious faith is an important part of some people’s identity. They have learned that Christians sometimes think, ‘What would Jesus do?’ when they are making hard decisions, and this week the Year 10s started to find out how the teachings of the Islamic faith guide Muslims. We made and rolled dice with some core values of Islam written on them and thought about how these values could influence our lives. For example, how could we show respect to those around us? Or support a charity? Could we commit to being honest all day, every day..?! There were lots of interesting ideas!

Year 9 Outdoor Learning

January 24, 2025/0 Comments/in General News, Uncategorized/by David Pearce

Persevering to develop our skills

Year 9 Red and Lime Classes were really challenged this week in Outdoor Learning and showed real resilience. After lots of preparation work to reinforce our fire safety knowledge, Year 9 chose to make either a teepee or a waffle fire and lit it with the ferro rods. Lime’s fire caught and kept us warm; Red did not manage to light it this week despite HUGE efforts and great sparking skills. This was frustrating for everyone, but they maintained their positivity and are looking forward to trying alternative techniques to make a campfire next time.
